Soon, Microsoft is releasing Windows 10 v1903, which will allow user to go for passwordless sign-in for accounts in Microsoft on windows 10 device. With this one big step further, PCs will be accessed without the hassle of entering passwords. In this environment user needs not to remember complex passwords. As passwords are vulnerable to attacks and can easily be compromised so, MICROSOFT team is developing password less login feature. This will make the login process more secure, simpler and better. User will be able to login in using Windows Hello face authentication, a PIN code or fingerprints. When user choose new feature i.e. “make your device passwordless”, screen to login into the account will not show password option.

Why This Approach Is Being Used?

  1. Passwords Are Not Easy To Recall:- For making password unique and secure users has to set difficult passwords which sometimes couldn’t be recalled easily and make the situation worst for them.
  2. In fact users start reusing the same passwords on different platform. Situation becomes worst when they use phrases which are easy-to-guess.
  3. Above mentioned practices makes the passwords susceptible to cyber-attacks. In Satya Nadella’s words, “One of the biggest security issues is passwords.”

Brief Look To New Features

  • Allows login into a Windows 10 PC using a passwordless phone number on a Microsoft Account:- For creating a Microsoft account user needs to enter a phone number in place the username and then fill a code which is being sent to user’s number to start the login. Once logged into windows 10, further login could be done using Windows Hello or a PIN.
  • For first time Sign-in to Windows with Microsoft Authentication App.
  • Sign-In Using Windows Hello which is FIDO2 (Fast Identity Online) authenticator. FIDO2 comprises of a web API (webAuth) as well as CTAP (Client To Authentication Protocol).
  • Shows Hello Pin Recovery Message above the Lock Screen of the window. User can use the Authenticator App of Microsoft instead using password to reset their PIN when signing in.

How Helpful Will It Be For Users?

Secure To Use

The risk of cyber-attacks gets reduced using multi-factor authentication (MFA) passwordless solution.

Convenient Approach

Easy data Access from anywhere using passwordless sign in.

Easy Management Solution For Users

An identity and access management solution is provided for enabling single sign-in, managing multi-factor authentication, and restricted access by defining access policies for its users.

Still Have A doubt! Read To Know How It Works?

Try to understand this by a theory where a private key is provided to the user to encrypt a large number which is being sent by the website. Further, website has to decrypt this code using a public key. If the combination of encryption/decryption works, then user is proved to be the private key owner. Practically this approach works when user has Authenticator for creating and storing keys. Besides that a set of rules are followed by the users’ computer, browser as well as the websites users hit, for making it work successfully.

What High-Tech Authorities Says About This – Let’s Have A Look

“Windows Hello for Business is personal, easy, and gives a brilliant experience to user with high security. We love the feature of logging into Windows using our fingerprint or face.”

– Peter Scott, British Telecom Technology

“Security devices works perfectly with our current scenarios. It is easy to display and simple to use. We sees value in rolling FIDO2-enabled badge for all our staff in future.”

– Emirates IT
