How to Block a Particular Email ID in Gmail (Desktop)

Please note that if you process a lot of emails daily, you can enable the reading pane in Gmail. This will allow you to quickly preview message contents.   • Step 1. Log in to your Gmail account on any browser.
  • Step 2. Open the last email of a sender whose email address you wish to block in Gmail.
  • Step 3. On the mail dashboard, click on the three horizontal dots icon on the top right side.
  • Step 4. In the pop-up bubble, click the < Block “sender name” > button.
  • Step 5. A new window will appear on your screen asking you to confirm. Click on the Block button.
  • Step 6. You will see a small black alert box pop up in the bottom left corner with the line “Email address blocked.”
  • Step 7. Also, a light grey ribbon will appear on top of the email with the message “You blocked … “

Blocking a sender on mobile is even easier. Let’s look at the steps.

How to Block Email ID in Gmail on Mobile

For people who use Gmail on the go, this is the best course of action.

  • Step 1. Open the Gmail app on your mobile (Android or iOS).
  • Step 2. Tap on the message from the sender you don’t want to receive any new emails from.
  • Step 3. Then, tap on the 3 dots icon.
  • Step 4. Choose the Block “sender” option.

If you feel that blocking emails one by one is too slow, you can rely on filters. However, for adding filters, you must use the web app; the mobile app does not have this feature yet.

Block Multiple Email IDs in Gmail Automatically Using Filters

It’s possible that your account could be part of a data leak. Then blocking one or two spammers won’t be enough. Especially if it’s not people but bots that are automatically sending emails to you. That’s where another Gmail facility, “Email Filters,” will help you.

  • In your Gmail home screen, click on the Show search options icon (the slider icon) inside the Gmail search bar at the top.
  • In the From field, type the email addresses you want to block (separate multiple addresses using OR, e.g., [email protected] OR [email protected]).
  • Click Create filter at the bottom of the options window.
  • Check the box that says Delete it.
  • Click Create filter to finalize the rule.

Unblock Email on Gmail

Sometimes you might accidentally block the wrong email ID. You don’t want to miss out on official banking communication because one promotional mail was flagged by mistake. So you must unblock the email as soon as you realize. The methods are as follows:

Method 1. When you block the sender, you will see a light grey banner appear on top. Use the unblock button inside the banner to unblock the user’s email. Note that if any emails were sent during the period while the sender was blocked, they will end up in the spam folder, so please check the spam folder and fix it.

Method 2. You can undo a block from settings.

  • Click the Gear icon (Settings) in the top right corner of Gmail desktop, then click See all settings.
  • Go to the Filters and Blocked Addresses tab.
  • Scroll down to find the list of blocked accounts.
  • Locate the address and click Unblock on the right side of the screen.
