Exchange Journaling may help an organization to comply with reasonable and obligatory auditing requirements via monitoring all incoming as well as outgoing email discussions. Two types of journaling in Exchange are:

  1. Standard Journaling – This type of journaling is configured on a specific mailbox database that journal all the emails that are sent and received by mailboxes. In order to journal all the emails to and from all the senders and recipients in an organization, users must need to configure the journaling on all mailbox databases on Exchange Severs.
  2. Premium Journaling – This Journaling lets the Journaling agent execute more granular journaling with the help of journal rules. Rather than journaling all user mailboxes that reside on the mailbox database, one can configure rules for matching organization’s requirements by journaling respective recipients/ distribution group members. To use premium journaling, users must have Exchange Enterprise CAL (Client Access License).

When the user enables the standard journaling on a mailbox database, the data becomes saved in the Active Directory (AD) and is examined by the Journaling agent.
