STEP 4

SysTools ZIP password recovery tool offers two different recovery modes: Unknown Password (Brute Force) and Partial Known Password (Mask).

Choose the Unknown Password (Brute Force) mode if you don’t know the password, especially when you have no clues or remembered characters about it, and provide the asked details (optional):

unknown password

STEP 5

Choosing Unknown Password (Brute Force) tells the software to use a systematic, exhaustive search. Unlike dictionary attacks (which run through a list of common words), brute force tries every single possible combination of characters within your parameters.

Password Length (in Char): Define the estimated boundaries of your password length.
  • Min: The shortest the password could be.
  • Max: The longest the password could be.
  • Select Charset: Choose the types of characters to include in the search. Narrowing this down speeds up recovery.
  • Include Uppercase letters (e.g., ABCDEF): Use when your password contains capital letters.
  • Include Lowercase letters (e.g., abcdef): Use when your password contains lowercase letters.
  • Include Numbers (e.g., 123456): Use when your password contains digits.
  • Include Special Characters (e.g., #@$!%): Use when your password contains symbols or punctuation.
  • Include Space or Tab: Use if your password contains spaces or indentation.
  • Password Starts With: If you have a hint about the very first character, select its category here to cut down search time.
  • Capital Letter / Small Letter / Numeric / Special Character: Forces the engine to only generate passwords starting with that specific character type.
  • None: Default option if the starting character is completely unknown.

Important Note: Please check only those boxes where you are confident about the accuracy of the information. Do not fill in uncertain information. For Example Password is: 1234

Documentation Tip: It is always helpful to use any hint (like capping the Max length or unchecking special characters if you are sure you didn't use any) can save hours of compute time!

STEP 5

The Mask Attack is the ultimate middle ground between a blind Brute Force attack and knowing the exact password. It is used when you remember the structure or pattern of the password, but not the exact characters.

Password Length (in Char): Specify the range of the password length.
  • Min: The minimum number of characters you think the password has.
  • Max: The maximum number of characters.
  • Prefix / Suffix:
  • Prefix: If you know how the password starts (e.g., "Sys"), enter it here.
  • Suffix: If you know how the password ends (e.g., "23"), enter it here.
  • Select Charset: Check the boxes for the character types you believe are in the password. Leaving unnecessary character sets unchecked will make the recovery much faster.
  • Include Uppercase letters (e.g., A, B, C): Use when your password contains uppercase letters.
  • Include Lowercase letters (e.g., a, b, c): Use when your password contains lowercase letters.
  • Include Numbers (e.g., 1, 2, 3): Use when your password contains numbers.
  • Include Special Characters (e.g., @, #, $, %): Use when your password contains special characters.
  • Include Space or Tab: Use this if your password contains spaces or tabs.

Important Note: Please check only those boxes where you are confident about the accuracy of the information. Do not fill in uncertain information. For Example: Sys@123

Why use it?: It is drastically faster than a standard Brute Force attack. By eliminating possibilities that you know are wrong, you reduce the search time from days or weeks down to minutes or hours.
