First, let’s understand calendar ownership. When a user creates a new calendar event using a Google Workspace account, they become the owner of the calendar. They are the one who has administrative control over the calendar meetings.

The role of the Calendar owner is to share the calendar with others with proper permissions and settings. Google Calendar has one owner, but multiple users may have permission to make changes and manage the sharing of the calendar.

Can you change the owner of a Google Calendar event?

Google Calendar allow you to change the organizer of an event by transferring to another user. But the processes are different depending on the type of calendar you have. If you are transferring ownership of secondary calendars, then it is done by updating the sharing permissions. For primary calendars, you can’t directly transfer the ownership. But you can change the particular event of the calendar.

Limitations of Changing Google Calendar Ownership

Changing the ownership is not an easy task. As there are several restrictions on what you can move and what you cannot. It is important to know these drawbacks to start the procedure.

  • The main restriction is that you cannot change the owner of the primary calendar in Google.
  • The secondary calendar has one owner, but it grants permission to others to edit events and manage sharing.
  • In work or school calendars, you cannot transfer the ownership outside of the organization.
  • The new owner must properly accept the transfer i.e., sent by email. Until then, the old user will remain the owner.
  • If the owner account is deleted before the new owner accepts the transfer. Some calendar events may be lost.
  • If an event contains a Google Meet link, it may change during the transfer according to the new owner’s account settings.
