Recently an employee left our company. My manager gave me a task to remove its device from our Office 365 account. I actually do not know about deleting the device. So, can you help me to remove the device from Office 365?

Remove Device from Microsoft Endpoint Manager

There are some organizations who use Microsoft Endpoint Manager or Intune to manage their devices. From this platform you can easily delete the device. This method is helpful when the device is lost, stolen, replaced, or an employee leaves the organization. To know how it works, follow the steps below.

  1. Go to the Microsoft Intune Admin center and log in to your admin account.
  2. At the left-hand panel, you will see the Devices option, click it.
  3. Now, you have a list of devices that are registered in your organizations.
  4. Then, find the device you want to remove and press the name of the device.
  5. You have three options available: Retire, Wipe and Delete. Click on the Delete button.
  6. Lastly, confirm the actions and your device is now deleted from your Office 365 account.

Delete Device from Microsoft 365 (From Administrator)

From the admin center, you can easily remove devices from various users. Follow the steps to know how?

  1. First, log in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center using the administrator credentials.
  2. Once you have access to the admin portal, go to the Users section, then select the specific user whose device you want to remove.
  3. After finding the users, click on the Devices section to list all the devices associated with the user account.
  4. Choose the device and click on Remove or Revoke access option. Also, confirm that you want to delete the device.

Remove Device from Office 365 (User’s End)

If you are a regular user of Microsoft 365 account and you want to delete your device. Then, you can do this, by following these steps.

  1. Go to the account.microsoft.com/devices site. Then, sign in with the account using your account details.
  2. After that, find your device and click on the view details at the top.
  3. Select the remove device option, then follow the instructions to confirm the removal.

Here are the ways to delete devices from Microsoft 365. By using them you can easily remove the device. But, that’s not enough in device management of Office 365. You also take several other steps which I have explained below.

Practices to Manage Device from Microsoft 365

From the above methods you now understand how to remove devices. But, what about the other devices in your Office 365 account. You have to also properly manage them, so there would be no conflict. Below are some practices that you must follow.

  • Check your all the connected devices in the Office 365 account regularly. This way you can find inactive or unfamiliar devices and remove them as soon as possible.
  • To manage your device, the admin center is very helpful. Here, you can view device details, enforce policies, perform remote wipes, etc.
  • Use Conditional access policies to assign rules to find out how and when devices can access Microsoft 365 resources.
  • Integrate Office 365 with Microsoft Intune to manage devices according to organization standards.
  • Create awareness to all end-users about safely using the device. Encourage them to sign out of unused devices, use strong passwords, and report the lost or stolen devices immediately.
  • When a device is lost or stolen, contact the administrator as soon as possible to handle the situation.
