If you want to create a calendar in Microsoft Teams, the process can feel confusing because Teams doesn’t include a built-in team calendar by default. I’ve learned how to create a calendar on Microsoft Teams via Outlook Group Calendars, the Channel Calendar app, SharePoint Lists, or the personal Teams Calendar.

In this guide, I’ll quickly show how I create each type of calendar step by step so you can choose the method that fits your needs.

Can You Create a Calendar Directly in Microsoft Teams?

The answer depends on what you mean by “create a calendar, i.e.

  • Yes, Teams has a built-in Meetings calendar that syncs with Outlook.
  • No, Teams does not provide a default team calendar for each channel or team.

However, I can still create a team or channel calendar using Outlook Groups, SharePoint, Microsoft Lists, or the Channel Calendar app in Teams.

Below, I’ll explain each method thoroughly. But before, do you know how to create a team on Microsoft Teams? If not, then please learn that. So that you can make a calendar for that effectively.

How to Create a Calendar on Microsoft Teams?

There are some methods which I found to make calendars in Teams simultaneously and effectively, i.e.

#Method 1. Use the Outlook Group Calendar

Every Microsoft Team is backed by a Microsoft 365 Group. This group automatically has an Outlook calendar, which I use because it integrates perfectly with email, reminders, and Teams. Here’s how you can add a calendar in Microsoft Teams:

  1. Open Microsoft Teams.
  2. Go to the team.
  3. Click the three dots (…) at the top and select Open in SharePoint.
  4. In SharePoint, click the Microsoft 365 Group link in the top-right corner.
  5. This opens the Group Calendar in Outlook for Web.
  6. Copy the calendar URL.
  7. Return to Teams and open the team or channel.
  8. Click the + (Add a tab) button.
  9. Choose Website.
  10. Paste the Group Calendar URL and save.

#Method 2. Use the Channel Calendar App in Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams offers an app called Channel Calendar, and below are the steps to built it:

  1. Open Teams and navigate to the team or channel.
  2. Click + (Add a tab).
  3. Search for Channel Calendar.
  4. Add it to the channel.
  5. Give the calendar a name and save.

#Method 3. Create a SharePoint Calendar Using Microsoft Lists

SharePoint no longer includes classic calendars by default, but I can create a modern calendar using Microsoft Lists, which is fully customizable. So, learn how to create a calendar in SharePoint:

  1. Go to the team and select Open in SharePoint.
  2. Click New > List.
  3. Choose Blank list or the Event template.
  4. Add the necessary columns, such as:
    • Event Title
    • Start Date
    • End Date
    • Location
    • Description
  5. Once created, open the list.
  6. Click Views and select Calendar view.
  7. Save the view.

Add to Teams:

  1. Return to Teams and open the team or channel.
  2. Click + (Add a tab).
  3. Select Lists.
  4. Choose the calendar list you created.

#Method 4. Use the Built-in Teams Calendar

If you want to manage your personal meetings inside Teams, this is the most straightforward method.

  1. Open Microsoft Teams.
  2. Click Calendar in the left-hand menu.
  3. Use the options to:

    • Schedule meetings

Migrating Microsoft Teams Calendars Between Tenants or Accounts

Creating and managing calendars in Microsoft Teams is straightforward with the methods I covered above. However, migrating these calendars to another Microsoft 365 tenant is a completely different challenge.

Teams calendars are tied to Microsoft 365 Groups, Exchange, and SharePoint, which means they can’t be exported or transferred manually. Now, the question is how to do so? For the same, I researched and found an automated solution that will help in this, i.e. SysTools Microsoft Teams Migration Tool.

It handles calendar migration along with related Teams components. Instead of rebuilding events, channels, or permissions from scratch, the tool automatically migrates:

  • Teams calendars
  • Team and channel structure
  • Channel conversations
  • Files, wikis, OneNote
  • Members, owners, and permissions
  • Group settings and configurations

If you’re planning a Microsoft Teams tenant to tenant migration, using a dedicated migration tool ensures the calendar data moves accurately.
